Familiar Place: Life on life's terms.
I am sitting on the couch facing the television, the news is low. I can still faintly the depressing shit: gun shots, fires, kidnappings. I block it out, looking at my phone I click the Instagram icon, scrolling down looking at all the couples and babies, lets not forget all the "turnt up friday" quotes. I laugh because it is always the same people. I get distracted from my phone I hear "MaMa." Mya is calling me pointing to the counter top wanting a pretzel, she runs out grabbing her sippy cup "juice, juice MaMa juice" I take her cup. She whines, grunting, throwing a fit because, I'm not moving fast enough for her. I scream "Mya stop it, NOW!" She runs in the living room to her Pop-pop. He picks her up, I come out with the juice she takes it. My grandmother sitting on her rocking chair next to my dad, she asks me to look up the mega million from the night before, I pull it up on my phone I say " 7,42,53,58,71 15" she screams dramatically with her one hand up "wait, wait, I need to write them down" I give her a dirty look, because she should have paper already. I repeat she writes them down, she goes to look on the shelf behind her, where she thinks she put them. Pulling down a pile of papers mumbling to her self "where is it, it's always my stuff" "someone is always stealing from me" My dad and I just look at each other because we know whats next. She stands up frantically searching her nightgown pockets, rushing to her bedroom almost dripping over her oxygen cord, Screaming "This isn't fair. My brother runs into the living room saying "you do this everyday! START PUTTING THEM IN THE SAME PLACE" I stay seated on the couch, My dad and I discuss how she is losing her mind. " You know what Jimmy, FUCK YOU! she says. Finally my brother finds them right next to her chair on the floor. "Oh, thank you Jimmy oh my god," She sits down " They must have dropped out of my pocket." We all yell "take a nerve pill!" Everything settles, Mya has Mickey mouse on the TV, laying on the couch eating puffs, holding her teddy. I make my self something to eat and sit down. The phone rings its my mom because my dad will not answer her calls on his cell. My grandmother answers saying he is not here.. . the yelling begins.
Strange Place: One Big Mystery
I wake up to water trickling at my ears, my face stiff from the sunlight. I jump up, water splashing around my body. I find myself laying in a marsh. I look behind me and see Cattails blowing in the wind. "How did I get here" I ask myself, while getting up walking to land. I head toward a shack in the far woods, hoping someone will be there. As I walk I notice hawks circling above waiting to dive down on their prey. My mind racing wondering how I will get home. I see something little off shore, I walk closer realizing it is a little shack. I knock on the door over and over, hoping someone will answer. I try the door knob, but it is locked I knock one more time, no answer. I step back and kick the door open, a cloud of dust shoots out, waving my hands I look deeper seeing cob webs all over kitchen counter. I walk further in and look to my left, to the living room. There appears to be a skeleton sitting in a chair facing the TV, aside of him a small end table with a plate and mug. "This place had to of been abandoned for over 50 years." "Why hasn't anyone came to retrieve the remains?" I ask myself. I have saw enough, I walk outside and begin down a path into the woods. Kicking leaves from the bare trees above, reminding me it is fall and if I do not get home by winter, I will be another corps they find. I was at home having a wonderful day, I picked the kids up from school. I made dinner while they did their homework. We all sat at the table eating dinner, told each other about our day. My hubby and I cleaned up and put a movie on. I remember feeling tired, I must of dosed off on the couch, but how did I end up here? How did I wake up in a body of water, am I dreaming? I continue to walk, I hear crackling in the bushes next to me a family of dear are searching for food. One looks up with me, with one eye missing, I scream! and they all frantically run away. I cannot believe what I am see I pause and try to catch my breathe. Am I going crazy? this is not real, I am not really here. WAKE UP WAKE UP! I scream. Someone voice faintly in the distance, "Who's there, can you here me?"" I scream back "YES YES! I'm here" running toward the voice, It becomes clearer. The smell of fire wood burning rushed up my nose. I run faster, a feeling of contentment comes over me. Finally I see the man, he is wearing rags, hair to his shoulder. "How long have you been here?" I said "Since I was 27, and I will be.. what month is it?" "It is September last time I checked" I chuckled "I will be 43 in December, so sixteen years." "wow that is unbelievable" We walk toward his shelter he offers food "yes please I am starving" I look around between to trees is a little tent made from thick sticks laying on top what appears to be deer fur. Handing me food on a leaf fallen from the tree, I shove the it in my mouth, chewing it like I have never eaten before. I shallow, "So What is your name" I ask him, "My name is, Pete and you?" "I am Alicia, thank you so much for the food" "No problem, I have plenty" we sit on the log around his fire and tell each other about our lives back home. He tell me he leaves behind a daughter and a Wife both named Elizabeth. I ask him how he got here and he answers he doesn't remember anything.
